2.2 Kaziranga, Abode of the One-Horned Rhino

3/3/24 Sunday

Flagging off our expedition from Guwahati at 8.15 am, we ascend a hill, straddling the border between Assam and Meghalaya. On one side of the serpentine ribbon, are the lush landscapes of Assam while on the other lies Meghalaya. How awesome is that!!!

Interestingly we are cruising again on the Asian Highways network, this time on AH 1, a transcontinental masterpiece that connects Tokyo to Turkey. We traverse through diverse terrains and cultures as Kaziranga awaits, promising encounters with the majestic One-Horned Rhinoceros.

Venturing through quaint villages adorned by lush tree canopies, our journey paints a charming picture of simplicity. Neat little houses on either side of the road enhance the scenic beauty, making every mile a frame-worthy moment.

Upon reaching the Borgos hotel in Kaziranga, we indulged in a delightful lunch, fueling up for an afternoon jeep safari.

Under intermittent clouds, our jeep wades through a small river and sand patches, treating us to an unexpected sand bath – good thing for hats and masks, or we'd be the latest members of the desert disguise club! Amidst the rugged terrain, we encounter the majestic rhinos, graceful deer, watchful monitor lizards, and gentle giants, the elephants.

We retreat to the hotel, where the vibrant rhythms of the Assamese Bihu dance add a cultural flourish to the evening.

Tomorrow promises another chapter of excitement as we set forth towards Majuli, one of the ten most beautiful villages of India.
